During the 1960's and 1970's, Equifax came under criticism for the extensive nature of information that it was obtaining about consumers. This included information about an individual and other private parts of a person's life like marital status, employment, sex life and political affiliation. Much of the criticism was due to not only the extensive nature of the information, but the methods by which it was obtained, and their willingness to "sell" the information.

The Lotus Development Corporation and Equifax Inc. said today that they had canceled plans to sell a data base of names, addresses and marketing information on 120 million United States consumers. Stored on compact disks for use on personal computers, the product, which was to be called Marketplace: Households, had been scheduled for shipment in March.

As of July 2007, Equifax form letters include a toll-free number, (888)876-5796, that is no longer in service. Below this defunct phone number, the Equifax form letter informs customers that they "must call within 60 days" if they wish to dispute any information contained within the letter.
