Conserving ink for the Epson 740 and 740i printers can save a considerable amount of money. By printing in Economy mode, you can save ink, but it prints in a light grey color that some users may find difficult to read. This setting is usually used for rough drafts of text on plain paper. The following procedure must be completed within each application in which the user wants to conserve ink. The print window may look slightly different in different applications, but these directions should apply to ALL applications.

Epson printers are directly connected to the computer. They are NOT networked. Therefore, on a Mac you do not need to worry about zones, and on a PC you do not work with NIPrint. There are three types of ports that can connect an Epson to the computer: Universal Serial Bus (USB), the Serial port, and the Parallel port. The USB port has a small rectangular socket, the Serial port has a small circular socket, and the Parallel port has a large, flat, rectangular socket. Most Macs on campus connect via either USB or Serial port, while most PCs use a Parallel port connection (a few use USB.) It is important to note that the USB cable can only be a maximum of 6.5 feet long . The printer is ... plugged into a power source separate from the computer. Before printing, make sure the rectangular USB cable (with the symbol ) or circular serial cable is in the correct port in the printer and connected to the back of the CPU.

The Epson software printer drivers are legendary for being quirky, a polite way for saying they are not always dependable. This means they often don't function like you need them to. So be sure you get a real PostScript RIP or at least a serious RIP that can handle the printer. Don't forget, the RIP is the brains of the printer. A desktop printer with no RIP is limited (didn't you ever wonder why those desktop inkjet printers were so cheap to buy).
