The Epilepsy Foundation of America's mission is the education, prevention and control of epilepsy and its consequences. They help persons with epilepsy, their families and other individuals overcome the problems associated with this condition. The Foundation has local chapters and will assist persons who wish to start a support group in their locality. They provide parent matching through their family support telephone network, matching support parents with new parents in a similar situation.

According to the Epilepsy Foundation of America, epilepsy is a physical condition that occurs when there is a sudden, brief change in how the brain works. When brain cells are not working properly, a person's consciousness, movement, or actions may be altered for a short time. These physical changes are called epileptic seizures. Epilepsy is therefore sometimes called a seizure disorder. Epilepsy affects people in all nations and of all races.

According to the Epilepsy Foundation of America, one percent of Americans have some form of epilepsy. Because of the differences in severity and complexity of the disorder, treatment planning is a result of close communication between the epilepsy specialist, primary care physician, patient and family. Many physicians in the Sutter Health system provide routine treatment for patients with epilepsy.

Nancy Brantner, Executive Director of the Epilepsy Foundation of Central Ohio, says the one-day event is crucial to getting an ear with legislators. “This is an excellent time to be heard,” she says. “It is the perfect opportunity for those who want to develop as advocates to learn and become involved. The training really makes it easy.”

The Epilepsy Foundation of Hawaii (EFH) provides direct services to individuals with seizure disorders. It is estimated that over 18,000 Hawaii residents suffer from epilepsy and over 75,000 people are touched by it. For over 20 years the EFH has provided information and educational services to individuals and groups with questions pertaining to epilepsy.

Epilepsy is defined by recurrent unprovoked seizures, or changes in sensation, awareness, or behavior brought about by electrical disturbances in the brain. The kind of seizure a person has depends on which part and how much of the brain is affected by the electrical disturbance that produces seizures. Generalized seizures are seizures that involve the entire brain from the outset. Partial seizures, which are the most common form of epilepsy, involve a restricted area of the brain. In approximately 70 percent of cases, the cause of epilepsy is unknown. According to the Epilepsy Foundation, more than 3 million Americans of all ages are living with epilepsy.
