Enter the Matrix is the first video game based on The Matrix series of films. It was developed by Shiny Entertainment and published by Atari and WB Interactive for the PlayStation 2, Xbox and Nintendo GameCube game systems, and for the PC. It reportedly cost over $30 million to create, one of the most expensive games ever developed. It sold one million copies in its first eighteen days of release, 2.5 million over the first six weeks, and eventually 5 million copies.[1] Enter the Matrix was simultaneously produced with The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions.

Enter the Matrix is basically a beat-em-up, shoot-em-up 3rd person action game. It combines arcade style fighting with a twist of the bullet-time slow motion seen in the Matrix movies. The guns auto-lock to the nearest target around, allowing you to fire the gun and aim at your desired target, unless you switch to first person mode and aim yourself. The game is fun, yet repetitive. You walk into a room, beat everybody up, then go into the next room and repeat. Boss battles are okay, but not the greatest.

The story of Enter the Matrix begins in the netherworld between the first and second films, connecting with the plot of the Animatrix shorts. Captain Niobe (Jada Pinket Smith of the second and third films, who endured hours of motion-capture work and dialog work for the game) of the hovercraft Logos, and her trusty partner Ghost are called upon to jack into the Matrix in order to obtain some important information. Another hovercraft crew left a package for them, just before their ship met with a gruesome end. As Niobe or Ghost, the player goes about searching the post office to find that message, without letting the cops get in the way. After this level, which provides ample opportunity for the player to get to know the controls, moves and techniques involved in evading or doing away with the enemy, the story gets more complicated and takes the player on a journey that overlaps the plot of the second Matrix film and leads into the third.

"Enter The Matrix" is in a unique situation. It will benefit from the massive marketing efforts surrounding the new Matrix film this summer, which should help sales. Then, just as the holiday season gets underway, the marketing blitz will start for the third film in the trilogy, "The Matrix: Revolutions", will start, in anticipation of the November release. That likely will spur game sales once again.

While there are a handful of driving and shooting stages, the vast majority of Enter The Matrix's gameplay focuses on brawling and gunplay. Two buttons let loose strings of kung-fu style attacks, while another can be used to perform attack reversals and weapon strips. (Funnily enough, many enemies will just pull another gun out of their pants after losing their initial weapon.) Another button activates "focus", which puts everything in slow motion for a bit and lets you perform more impressive moves. Knocking enemies about with the various punch and kick combinations seemed satisfying for a while, but quickly become boring as I noticed how skill-less and repetitive the combat was. Enter The Matrix is the ultimate button masher: Just mash the buttons, watch cool stuff happen, and move on to the next mysteriously spawning, AI-challenged enemy.

Enter the Matrix is definitely worth picking up. The graphics and sound really show just what your Xbox is capable of and the simple but fun action keeps you busy for hours on end. Sure, there's been a lot of backlash about the sequels and the tie-ins and the producers of The Matrix have been accused of getting greedy, but don't believe all that rubbish. The Matrix Revolutions manages to be even more mind-blowing than the first film and this groundbreaking game ties-in perfectly to the film and is one title you really have to check out for yourself.
