Enlightenment: People
built 236 days ago
What ultimately and abruptly killed the Enlightenment... was the French Revolution. Begun with the best intentions by French citizens inspired by Enlightenment thought, the revolution attempted to implement orderly representative assemblies but quickly degraded into chaos and violence. Many people cited the Enlightenment-induced breakdown of norms as the root cause of the instability and saw the violence as proof that the masses could not be trusted to govern themselves. Nonetheless, the discoveries and theories of the Enlightenment philosophers continued to influence Western society for centuries.

Enlightenment is a window manager. Enlightenment is a desktop shell. Enlightenment is the building blocks to create beautiful applications. Enlightenment, or simply e, is a group of people trying to make a new generation of software.
Enlightenment does not make an individual intelligent or wise. All too often, they find themselves as a minority in a community of self-serving people. For this reason, humility and self love is a real virtue with enlightenment as it assists those to survive.

The term can more narrowly refer to the intellectual movement of The Enlightenment, which advocated reason as the primary basis of authority. Developing in France, Britain and Germany, the Enlightenment influenced most of Europe, including Russia and Scandinavia. The era is marked by such political changes as governmental consolidation, nation creation, greater rights for common people, and a decline in the influence of authoritarian institutions such as the nobility and Church.
For people who are 'seeking' enlightenment, the crucial question is HOW high or low. If it's too difficult, normal brains might not be able to manage it. But, normal brains don't care very much about it either, so there's no loss, really. People who are not prone to altered states don't get the sense that their fulfillment lies in developing their consciousness. For them the the peak moments of their lives, the ones they are most likely to try to achieve again, will lie within the range of normal states of consciousness.
[I]t took time for people to overcome this opinion and appreciate the Enlightenment’s beneficial effect on their daily lives. But concrete, productive changes did, in fact, appear, under guises as varied as the ideas that inspired them. The effects of Enlightenment thought soon permeated both European and American life, from improved women’s rights to more efficient steam engines, from fairer judicial systems to increased educational opportunities, from revolutionary economic theories to a rich array of literature and music.
