Treatment for endometriosis can be medical or surgical, depending on a woman’s age, symptoms and whether or not she plans to become pregnant. Medical treatments affect the hormonal cycles and may limit the growth of endometriosis. They include prescribing birth control pills or other hormones such as progesterone or gonadotrophin releasing hormone (GnRH). Medical treatments cannot reverse any damagecaused by endometrial growths. Surgery is the only way to remove the growths.

The name endometriosis comes from the word "endometrium," the tissue that lines the inside of the uterus. If a woman is not pregnant this tissue builds up and is shed each month. It is discharged as menstrual flow at the end of each cycle. In endometriosis, tissue that looks and acts like endometrial tissue is found outside the uterus, usually inside the abdominal cavity.

Although statistics are inconclusive as to whether pregnancy is therapeutic, many specialists have observed that endometriosis sometimes regresses during pregnancy. These doctors feel that the hormonal environment produced by pregnancy usually inhibits the disease. The condition may often return some time after pregnancy. The disease of endometriosis is when endometrium or endometrium-like tissue is in other places besides the uterus. Since it is a very hormonally reactive tissue, and since it isn't discarded away on a tampon to the outside world, it can sit in a woman's pelvis and thicken and shrivel cyclically with no way out. It is a fairly bloody substance, and since blood is very inflammatory to the lining of the abdomen, it causes pain and scarring that can cause adhesions (things meant to be floating free sticking together). Besides the bloody inflammation, there are other chemical irritants that not only contribute to the inflammation, but ... can retard the normal conception process.
