Endometriosis: Lining
built 647 days ago
While the menstrual pain itself can be quite excruciating, it is not the only time a person with endometriosis suffers. The lesions cause scar tissue to grow in the abdomen (and sometimes elsewhere), which bind internal organs to each other. Fallopian tubes, ovaries, the uterus, the bowels, and the bladder can be permanently damaged. This kind of pain is more debilitating on a daily basis and goes on for years, yet most sources of information seem to focus on menstrual symptoms.
Both fibroids and endometriosis benefit from the use of Omega-3 fatty acids in the diet. Fish oil and linseed oil are good sources of these Omega 3 fatty acids. Fish oil prevents abnormal blood clotting. If your menstrual blood contains clotty tissue, supplement with fish oil, linseed oil, and evening primrose oil (which ... contains gamma linolenic acid or Omega 6).
Empirical treatment for pain symptoms presumed to be due to endometriosis without a definitive diagnosis includes counselling, adequate analgesia, progestagens, the combined oral contraceptive (COC) and nutritional therapy. It is unclear whether the COC should be taken conventionally, continuously or in tricycle regimen. A GnRH agonist may be taken but this class of drug is more expensive, and associated with more side-effects and concerns about bone density.
The goal of the treatment for endometriosis should be aimed at relieving pain, controlling the progression of the endometriosis, and preserving fertility for future childbearing. Treatment can make a big difference in improving the quality of your life and medical science is constantly moving ahead. Most importantly, be sure that you have a consultation with a gynecologist who specializes in caring for teens with endometriosis.
Treatment for endometriosis associated with infertility needs to be individualized for each woman. There are no easy answers, and treatment decisions depend on factors such as the severity of the disease and its location in the pelvis, the age of the woman, length of infertility, and the presence of pain or other symptoms. Some general issues regarding treatment are discussed here:
Click to see larger picture MRI: The cost-effectiveness of this imaging modality for endometriosis has yet to be justified for use as a routine tool. However, MRI is helpful in detecting rectal involvement31 and has been shown to accurately detect rectovaginal endometriosis and cul-de-sac obliteration in more than 90% of cases when sonographic gel was inserted in the vagina and rectum32.
