Endometriosis is not the same as endometrial cancer. However it is hypothesized that the excess estrogen creation and abnormal cell growth caused by endometriosis may eventually cause ovarian or other cancers over a woman's lifetime. The staging of endometriosis is similar to the staging of cancers, as well, in the sense that they both gauge the spread of disease in a similar fashion to different zones of the body. Endometriosis is not the same as endometrial cancer. Current research has not demonstrated an association between endometriosis and endometrial, cervical, uterine, or ovariancancers. In very rare cases ( much less than one percent), endometriosis is seen with endometrioid cancer, but there is no evidence of a causative role between one and the other. Endometriosis often coexists with leiomyomaor adenomyosis.

Research by the Endometriosis Association (EA) revealed a startling link between dioxin (TCCD) exposure and the development of endometriosis. Dioxin is a toxic chemical byproduct of pesticide manufacturing, bleached pulp and paper products (such as chemically treated disposable tampons and pads), and medical and municipal waster incineration. The EA discovered a colony of rhesus monkeys that had developed endometriosis after exposure to dioxin. 79% of the monkeys exposed to dioxin developed endometriosis, and in addition, the more dioxin exposure, the more severe the endometriosis.

Many women who are treated by hysterectomy / oophorectomy instead of removal of the deep pelvic endometriosis continue to experience pain until these lesions are subsequently removed. The experiences of Drs. Koh and Janik have mirrored that of Dr. Redwine in Oregon, where repeat laparoscopic surgery of such women have revealed endometriosis present on bowel, around the ureter or in other deep areas of the pelvis. In an effort to publicize new understandings of endometriosis, the Endometriosis Association recently celebrated their 15th Anniversary in Milwaukee, where twenty world experts, including Drs. Koh and Janik, were invited to address the international forum.

The issue of endometriosis and infertility is controversial. Although there is a strong association between endometriosis and infertility, it has not been conclusively demonstrated that endometriosis actually causes infertility. Consequently the treatment of endometriosis and the subsequent effect on fertility is a subject of considerable debate. Recent studies do suggest some improvement in fertility in women with early stage disease treated surgically compared to those that are not treated. No form of medical treatment of endometriosis has ever been demonstrated to improve fertility. Specifically, hormonal treatment of endometriosis before or after surgical treatment does not improve fertility.

More than 5 million women in the US and Canada have endometriosis, according to the Endometriosis Association, a Milwaukee-based nonprofit research and education organization that supported the research. When the tissue begins growing outside its normal site, for example along the fallopian tubes, there can be chronic pelvic pain, disabling menstrual periods, pain during sex, and infertility. Treatments include surgery, hormones and pain medicines.
