Endometriosis: Doctors
built 675 days ago
If you're diagnosed with endometriosis, you have three basic treatment options: hormone therapy, surgery, or a combination of both. Hormone therapy works by manipulating the hormones that control menstruation and the swelling of your endometrium and endometrial lesions. This therapy may be used before, instead of, or after surgery. If hormone therapy is recommended, your doctor will discuss side effects and dosage with you.

Despite the availability of new knowledge from contemporary literature in the last five years, many doctors still mistakenly believe that hysterectomies and oophorectomies are the cure for endometriosis. To underscore this problem, David Redwine, MD, in a 1995 article in Obstetrics and Gynecology, stated "Endometriosis may be unique in that it is the only disease treated by the removal of something else."
Your doctor will take a detailed medical history to help determine whether you have endometriosis, and to rule out other possible illnesses. Details about your symptoms, including when they first started, how long they last, and where in the body they occur, can help to confirm or rule out endometriosis. Severe symptoms that occur suddenly usually indicate another type of illness.

Apart from the pain, there are other things that can make living with endometriosis a challenge for some girls. Some girls find it difficult explaining to friends and teachers why they miss school, sports, or other activities, for example. If you feel embarrassed, ask your doctor to write a note you can give to teachers and coaches so you don't have to explain yourself. You can then work with them to be sure you don't miss out on key assignments — or fun.

The only way to be sure you have endometriosis is to have a type of surgery called laparoscopy (say “lap-uh-ROS-cuh-pee”). During this surgery, the doctor puts a thin, lighted tube through a small cut in your belly. This lets the doctor see what is inside your belly. If the doctor finds implants, scar tissue, or cysts, he or she can remove them during the same surgery.
While there is no cure for endometriosis, you can be treated for your symptoms. It is very helpful to use a notebook, calendar or diary to keep track of your pain for a while. Writing down how your feel every day with a number (0-10) will help you to explain your pain to your doctor, where 0=no pain and 10=the worst pain you have ever had. You can ... keep track of your pain by writing in a pain diary. Ways to help you describe your pain:
