Behind Endo is the same team that created the seminal Ang Pagdadalaga ni Maximo Oliveros. The ufo Pictures team is composed of five multi-awarded screenwriters whose credits include some of the most successful – both commercially and critically – local films in recent memory. Anak, Tanging Yaman, Magnifico, Milan, Jologs are some of them. They found that writing for the commercial studio system had its limitations and share of frustrations. At times it felt like being invisible. The ability to conform to formulas was prized over the individuality of a unique voice.

In Japan, Mrs. Endo speaks of Shusaku as having "spent the whole of his life weaving the warp of faith and the weft of disease." (In their married life of over 40 years, he was hospitalized for over 10 years). She says that he left her with three tasks: to let people know that death is not the end of life; to make Jesus Christ appreciated properly by the Japanese; and to develop the program of reform that Endo started to make Japanese hospitals more "warm-hearted and friendly with regard to their patients, patients' families and friends."

On August 2, Endo entered the Bay of Biscay. Off Cape Ortegal, Spain, he was met by eight Luftwaffe Junkers Ju-88A attack bombers that provided air cover. Three days later, he was joined by a flotilla of minesweepers and escorted to Lorient -- then the largest of the five German U-boat bases on the French coast.

For Endo, though, this silence is not absence but presence. It is the silence of accompaniment rather than nihil. Music itself grows out of silence. Every composer knows that the pre-creative silence is not empty but pregnant with possibility. For Endo, it is the powerless, ineffectual Jesus, lover of the forsaken, which fills his silence. It is a shocking reminder that God's power is not of this place but something other.

Endo's widow, Junko, recalls that after he met Greene in London he was "leaping with joy." "He told Greene how greatly he had been influenced by his works and that he might even not have been a novelist had he not read his novels.
