Eminem ... gets a pass because he exposes his anguish. Rap has been hospitable to moon-june love songs, histrionic comedy, and political activism, but rarely to raw, self-loathing emotion. Eminem specializes in it: "Kim" re-enacts a gut-wrenching fight between Eminem and his wife. (Listen to "Kim" here.) "Stan," a series of letters from an increasingly unhinged Eminem groupie, may be the best song ever about fan obsession. (Click "Stan" for a bit of it.) No matter that "Kim" ends with Eminem murdering his wife, and "Stan" ends with Stan suffocating his girlfriend—critics adore the catharsis.

In the end, Eminem and Kim were married on Jan. 14 for the second time. Less than three months later, Eminem filed for divorce. Their first marriage lasted from 1999 to 2001.

Eminem was charged with carrying a concealed weapon following a June 4 confrontation outside a Warren nightclub. Police say Eminem struck a man - club bouncer John Guerrera - he says he saw kissing his estranged wife, Kim. Alledgedly, the victim was pistol-whipped, but Eminem has always denied this, claiming he only threatened him with the gun but hit him with his fist.

Difficult family issues have been a powerful influence on the music of Eminem. He grew up having never seen his father. In December, 1995, Eminem's girlfriend, and later wife, Kim, gave birth to their daughter Hailie Jade. He began working outside of music to try to support the family. As a result of discord between himself and Kim, Eminem attempted to commit suicide. They have married and divorced twice.
