Emile Durkheim: Groups
built 607 days ago
Emile Durkheim (1858-1917)born in the village of Epinal in the Vosges near Strasbourg,France. The disastrous Franco-Prussian war made a major impression on Durkheim, which can be seen in his fascination with the study of group solidarity.
Durkheim’s contributions to sociology mirror the problems, issues, and disputes of his time, but they ... have a lasting significance. Questions about social development, the scientific status of sociology, methods of social research, the need for precise research rather than sweeping generalizations, the relation of values to sociology, social aspects of economic life and of law, social control and solidarity, primitive and civilized mentalities, social characteristics of cognition and knowledge, group psychology, professional ethics, democracy and the state, problems of education—these were all topics to which he made an enduring contribution.
Durkheim's argument runs as follows. Firstly, people are susceptible to the moral authority exerted by respected individuals and social groups. Such authority when experienced in group situations is able to take people beyond themselves: to intensities of feeling and types of behaviour they are not capable of by themselves.
