- Sprites -- Elves
Figure 2(a) shows one of these unusual events, each of which consists of a closely associated -CG flash, an elves event, and accompanying sprites. NLDN recorded a -97 kA stroke (event 17 in Figure 1) at 06:15:16.305 UT. The polarity of the sferics recorded at Langmuir and at Stanford (Figure 2) is unambiguous at this range and confirm the polarity of the lightning. The bearing to this stroke, as well as the altitudes overlying its location, are shown on the video image. The video's pointing direction was determined with star field alignment. Photometers 1 through 9 show the distinctive signature [Inan et al., 1997; Barrington-Leigh and Inan, 1999] of elves, the flash due to widespread heating of the lower ionosphere by the electromagnetic pulse of lightning. - Valar -- Noldor Elves
The Heralds of the Valar are a magical guild. They receive their gifts from the Valar, the fourteen spirits that entered Arda to give order to the world and fight the growing evil growing. The Heralds are located in the Shire, and accept anyone from the races created by Eru Illuvatar; elves, half-elves, hobbits, and humans. - Dark Riders -- Dark Elves
The Dark Elves are the best army in taking the battle to the enemy. Their Scouts and Dark Riders are a frontline problem right from the beginning of the turn 1. Harpies and Dark Pegasi and other cheap flying monsters are an excellent addition to all this. If facing other Elves or Humans, you can add Shadowblade to all of this, and ... there is a very real chance that you can tie up or destroy a substantial part of the enemy force on turn one. If this succeeds, you can use your own Repeater Bolt Throwers and other such attacks to soften the enemy before engaging them with your Cold Ones and Witch Elves. Having crippled the enemy missile forces and wizards with your lightning attack, the foe is at your mercy. - Elrond -- Elves Men
The father of Elrond and Elros was Earendil the Mariner and their mother was Elwing. Earendil was Half-elven: his mother Idril was an Elf and his father Tuor was a Man. Elwing's mother Nimloth was an Elf and her father Dior was the son of Beren – a Man – and Luthien – the daughter of an Elf and a Maia. Thus Elrond and Elros were descended from both Elves and Men and were counted among the Half-elven, or Peredhil. - Sauron -- Silvan Elves
After the war was over, and Sauron had been defeated, there apparently was no talk of marching into Mordor and taking Sauron down a peg. Many Elves fled Middle-earth and Gil-galad elected to establish a new outpost at Imladris, which was farther north (and distant from Mordor) and more defensible than Eregion had been. The army or armies which had pursued Sauron back to Mordor must not have had sufficient resources to force their way into the land. So the implication of their withrdawal is that the Eldar and Numenoreans ran into something they were not ready to deal with. - Orc -- Grey Elves
The Orc origin question may have been one of the problems Tolkien tried to solve by completely changing the cosmology and prehistory of Arda. By setting the origin of Men back to almost the same time as the Elves, he possibly allowed for Men to be the origin of Orcs all along. However, Tolkien died before he could completely this upheaval of the cosmology, and in the published version of Silmarillion, the Elf origin of Orcs was adopted. - Nazgul -- High Elves
Authorities said in a statement today that a high-ranking Nazgul has been arrested on criminal charges in a scheme to embezzle millions from the government of Mordor. Grundir the Implacable, the undersecretary for Evil Ring Acquisition, was escorted from his home to the Minas Morgul police station. - Legolas -- Silvan Elves
Legolas is a very violent character in the movie. He's deadly, cold, and calculating when he confronts Orcs. But he ... has some interesting reactions. One of the odder parts of the movie occurs in the council of Elrond, when all the Elves and Dwarves start yelling at each other. There is nothing like this in the book. No Tolkien Elf or Dwarf would behave that way. - Galadriel -- Sindarin Elves
Galadriel was born in Valinor of mixed blood. Her father was part Noldo, part Vanya, while her mother provided the Telerin strain which stood her in good stead on her arrival in Beleriand. She remained primarily a Noldo in general outlook and strength of will all her life. Her given-names were apt enough. As was Elvish custom, Finarfin named his daughter Artanis ("noble-woman") and after a while Eärwen called her Nerwen ("man-maiden"). But she eventually settled upon Galadriel ("radiant garland"), which was probably her most used epessë or nickname anyhow, for even more than her father and brothers she was blessed with an abundance of the golden locks of her grandmother's people. - Languages of Middle-Earth -- Telerin Elves
An excellent resource for discussion of all the Tolkien languages by some of the world's leading scholars can be found on the web at the Tolkien Language List within their archives, or sign up for the discussion forum. Publications following scholars of Tolkien's original manuscripts are available through elvish.org, and further scholarship on etymology and grammar are available at Fellowship of the Word-smiths. An excellent in-depth discussion of the evolving etymological lexicons can be found at Ardalambion, of Quenya specifically, and of Sindarin specifically.
