The team of John and Taupin joined Dick James's DJM Records as staff songwriters in 1968, and over the next two years wrote material for various artists, like Roger Cook and Lulu. Taupin would write a batch of lyrics in under an hour and give it to John, who would write music for them in half an hour, disposing of the lyrics if he couldn't come up with anything quickly. For two years, they wrote easy-listening tunes for James to peddle to singers.
Elton John, the pop superstar was born March 25, 1947. During the early 70's, Elton John was the biggest pop artist in terms of sales and lasting popularity. Elton had such mega hits as "Your Song," "Rocket Man," "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road," "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me." Unlike many pop stars, Elton was able to sustain his popularity, charting a Top 40 Single every year from 1970 to 1996.

While the story hasn’t received many kudos from critics for coherence or originality, Elton makes no apologies for its silliness, telling an interviewer, “This show does not have pretensions to be 1984. It’s not a deeply serious story, but it has a satirical edge.”

All of John's musical styles are represented, from the tender Your Song, to the rocking Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting to the quirky Benny and the Jets. It ... contains 1973's Candle In the Wind, which became the world's best selling single of all time when it was re-recorded and dedicated to Princess Diana after her death.
