Elsa Lanchester (Elizabeth Sullivan) (October 28, 1902 – December 26, 1986) is an English character actress and former dance instructor born in Lewisham, London. Lanchester married Charles Laughton in 1929 and moved to Hollywood in 1940. In James Whale’s classic Bride of Frankenstein (1935) she portrayed both creator Mary Shelley and the memorable shock-haired mate for the Monster. . Elsa Lanchester (October 28, 1902 - December 26, 1986 in Woodland Hills, California) was an Oscar-nominated English character actress. A gifted and funny actress, she is best remembered for her role as the monster's wife in Bride of Frankenstein (1935). She, along with her husband, Charles Laughton, became American citizens in 1950.
Elsa Lanchester's career spanned silent films to contemporary television. Shewas noted for her individual and eccentric characterizations as well as hercomic ability. She will perhaps be best remembered for her film role as the mate of Dr. Frankenstein's monster in The Bride of Frankenstein. Lanchester starred opposite her husband, actor Charles Laughton, on stage and screen. Shemoved with him to Los Angeles in 1934, and became a United States citizen in1950. Incapacited by heart problems since suffering a stroke in 1983, she washospitalized December 17, 1986, and died nine days later.
