Ellis Island: United States
built 209 days ago
The interior of the hall at Ellis Islands museum. Ellis Island was the subject of a border dispute between New York State and New Jersey (see below). According to the United States Census Bureau, the island, which was largely artificially created through the landfill process, has an official land area of 129,619 square meters, or 32 acres, more than 83 percent of which lies in the city of Jersey City. The natural portion of the island, lying in New York City, is 21,458 square meters (5.3 acres), and is completely surrounded by the artificially created portion. For New York State tax purposes it is assessed as Manhattan Block 1, Lot 201. Since 1998, it ... has a tax number assigned by the state of New Jersey.
For many years Ellis Island was abandoned and the Statue of Liberty was in desperate need of repair. In what year did a U.S. President begin to raise money to help pay for the restoration? What is the president’s name?
In 1892, when Ellis Island opened its doors, the United States was the world's oldest democracy and one of its youngest nations. Much in need of the labor, brawn and talents of newcomers, this nation of people who were born and would continue to be born elsewhere, had to devise original methods for creating citizenship. One could become an American, as is the case in most western democracies, by being born here or by blood inheritance; but one could ... choose to be American.

ellisisland.JPG (47458 bytes) New York says the Ellis Island legacy began within its borders and the state’s claim to the island should not be stripped away now, despite New Jersey officials’ contentions that most of the 27-acre Ellis Island really belongs to them. Their dispute reaches the Supreme Court on Monday, when the justices will hear arguments over which state can claim that most of the island is within its boundaries.
Overview before restoration; the now-restored side is the right set of buildings. On October 15, 1965, Ellis Island was proclaimed a part of Statue of Liberty National Monument, which is managed by the National Park Service. The island is on the New Jersey side of the Hudson River. During the colonial period... New York had taken possession, and New Jersey had acquiesced in that action. In a compact between the two states, approved by U.S. Congress in 1834, New Jersey therefore agreed that New York would continue to have exclusive jurisdiction over the island.
Ellis Island is situated between two states. Both states claim ownership of the Island? What are the names of the two states? For how many years have they been arguing over ownership of this Island?
