Elliott Gould is one of the most recognizable and respected actors in Hollywood. In 1970, after originating the role of Trapper John in Robert Altman's MASH, Time magazine featured Gould on its cover, dubbing him a "star for an uptight age." Since then, Gould has gone on to cement his legend in Hollywood with memorable roles in such hits as Capricorn One, A Bridge Too far, The Long Goodbye , The Last Flight of Noah's Ark and The Devil and Max Devlin. In recent years, Elliott has introduced himself to a new generation of film fans after roles in American History X and Ocean's Eleven, but younger fans may remember him as Ross and Monica's father on Friends. As of late, Gould is getting set for a return to TV on Showtime's second season of Masters of Horror in director Joe Dante's adaptation of "The Screwfly Solution" where he plays Dr. Barnard Braithwaite.

A child model, Elliott Gould launched his performing career at Catskills resorts. He began his Broadway days at the age of eighteen, soon finding personal as well as professional success starring opposite Barbra Streisand; they married in 1963, though professional rivalry dissolved the union four years later. After sundry unremarkable film roles Gould found a breakthrough in Bob and Carol and Ted and Alice (1969) and won an Academy Award nomination. He then appeared as Trapper John in M*A*S*H (1970) and has since has been ubiquitous—in the 1980s and 1990s he continues to make several films a year. His latest film appearance is Ocean's Eleven (2001). He has a recurring role as the father of Ross and Monica on the TV show Friends.

Elliott Gould tells a story in "Rip Van Marlowe," the talking-head-and-clip-montage documentary included as a special feature in the new DVD release of The Long Goodbye, director Robert Altman's 1973 version of Raymond Chandler's novel. He recalls the recent filming of Steven Soderbergh's Ocean's 11 remake, in which Gould has a featured role. During the shoot, Soderbergh, apropos of nothing, asked Gould if he was improvising when he smeared ink all over his face during The Long Goodbye's police interrogation scene. Gould replied yes, to which Soderbergh, delighted, exclaimed "I knew it!"
