Elizabethtown
built 645 days ago
Elizabethtown was on the north side of Elizabeth Creek, from which the town derived its name, in the southwest corner of the Shamblen survey, fifteen miles southwest of Denton in Denton County. The first settlers there, members of the Peters colony, arrived around 1850. The settlement served as a supply station in 1852 for cowboys driving their herds north to Kansas. The town's founders, the Harmonsons, built a church, homes, a business, and a school, which at one time had twenty-five students. In 1859 the town had six saloons, a hotel, and a post office. George Harper, the doctor, was postmaster; M. H. Smith, Newton Chance, and Amos Bullard were blacksmiths; Sewell Brown was a merchant, James Snyder a wagonmaker, and Robert Wright a carpenter.

Founded in July 1797, Elizabethtown is the Hardin County seat. In 1779, three early settlers, Capt. Thomas Helm, Col. Andrew Hynes, and Col. Samuel Haycraft, built forts with blockhouses to use as stockades for defense against Native Americans. The forts, being one mile apart, formed a triangle. At the time, there were no other settlements between the Ohio River and the Green River. Soon... other people came and settled around these forts.

Interestingly, lots of people in Elizabethtown have Bachelor's degrees (or better). In the town, there is a large number of singles who make a good living.

At its worst, Elizabethtown feels like a retread of Almost Famous. A guy (Orlando Bloom, Kingdom of Heaven, Troy) goes on some important life-journey where he meets a free-spirited girl (Kirsten Dunst, Wimbledon, Spider-Man 2) and falls madly in love. This is a huge simplification, but one cannot help notice the similarities between Dunst's Claire Colburn and Kate Hudson's Penny Lane. Only Hudson is a better actor, and Lane was a fuller character. Colburn is a flight attendant that meets Drew Baylor on a flight back to Louisville, Kentucky. Baylor's father died, and he is going to bring the body back to Oregon.

Elizabethtown's post office was established in 1868, and was discontinued in 1931. Elizabethtown was the first incorporated city in New Mexico and even held the county seat. Charles Kennedy ran a boardinghouse here and when newcomers would come the would soon disappear. Charles was killing them and taking their valuables and burning the bodies bit by bit. The town was so enraged after Charles' wife confessed they got him, tied a rope around his neck, and dragged him by horse up and down main street until long after he was dead. After the easy gold was picked, operations shut down and today there are only a few buildings left.
