Elizabethan England
built 215 days ago
Elizabethan England is a fascinating historical time period. This time period is immensely different from modern day America. The streets in the Elizabethan time period were filthy. The homes emptied their waste out onto the street, and there were no trash facilities. Women were not allowed to go out on the streets alone unless accompanied by a man. Women didn't have much of a say in how their family was run and who would inherit such things when people passed away. Primogeniture, a system of inheritance that passed all of a family's wealth through the first male child, meant that a woman did not inherit their family's wealth or titles.

During the Renaissance and in Elizabethan England, witchcraft was believed to be a practice that caused harm and injury associated with black, or evil, magic. Witches were considered to be in league with the Devil, who gave them supernatural powers, and ... became the obvious opponent of the Christian Church. The Church traditionally attacked witches as diabolical and evil, considering their magic to be an illusion created by the Devil.

Elizabethan England did not have as many printing presses as some of the European countries, but the printing industry was a growing business. “Chapmen”, or wandering pedlars, sold “chapbooks” of popular stories and ballads to poorer social groups. Gentlemen could afford more expensive books, often the works of classical authors such as Livy, Tacitus, and Aristotle. Religious books were ... popular, and allowed English Protestants to read works by Martin Luther and John Calvin.

While Elizabethan England is not thought of as an age of technological innovation, some progress did occur. In 1564 Guilliam Boonen came from the Netherlands to be Queen Elizabeth's first coach-builder—... introducing the new European invention of the spring-suspension coach to England, as a replacement for the litters and carts of an earlier transportation mode. Coaches quickly became as fashionable as sports cars in a later century; social critics, especially Puritan commentators, noted the "diverse great ladies" who rode "up and down the countryside" in their new coaches.[9]

Elizabethan England faced a constant threat of war from Spain and France, and therefore it was imperative that Elizabethan weapons were contemporary with the times. Though quite surprising but England did not have a regular army during the Elizabethan era. Consequently, many weapons of the medieval period were still in use and were wielded by trained militia, which typically comprised of every able-bodied man between the age group of 18 and 60. There was clearly a need for advanced Elizabethan weapons.
