Since Elizabeth signed with Estée Lauder, she has taken an active role in the company's breast cancer charity. She revealed that her grandmother died from breast cancer because for a number of years she refused to reveal the existence of a lump. By the time this was revealed, it was too late to save her life. Elizabeth was the Mistress of Ceremonies at "The Hot Pink Party" at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City to mark the tenth anniversary of the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Additionally, Estée Lauder created a lipstick named "Elizabeth Pink" after Elizabeth : proceeds from the sale of every tube of "Elizabeth Pink" benefit The Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

At age sixteen Hurley was caught up in the English punk-rock scene, wore pink hair and had a nose ring. In spite of her pink-haired punk, she won a scholarship to study Dance and Theatre at the London Studio Centre, London, England. After college, Hurley worked in the theatre, touring in Asia and the Middle East. She next started a career in acting as soon as she made her screen debut in Aria (1987). While pursuing an acting career, Hurley, who once formed the dance troupe Vile Bodies... worked as a model for such companies as Estee Lauder.

Elizabeth is the daughter of an army officer and an elementary schoolteacher mother. While growing up Hurley dreamt of becoming a dancer, which prompted her to attend a boarding school specializing in ballet at the age of twelve. Her attendance at the boarding school was short-lived, she was a victim of punk fashion of the early 80s, since this was the thing, she stopped being a princess and became a punk.
