1. Cuban-Americans -- Miami Monday
   Cuban-Americans celebrated in the streets of Miami Monday night after learning that Fidel Castro had undergone abdominal surgery and turned over the presidency of Cuba to his brother Raul. And eager businesses eyeing the Cuban market cheered right alongside them.more »»»
2. Gloria Estefan -- Cuba Libre
   Nearly ten years later in 1995 Cuban-born celebrities Gloria Estefan and Andy Garcia returned to Cuba to serenade some 16,000 Cuban refugees held at the U.S. military base at Guantanamo Bay. In 1997, Gloria Estefan appeared on CNN defending the Embargo as a moral imperative, and once again exposed the regime in Cuba for what it is: a brutal tyranny. Towards the end of 1997 she spoke out in defense of free speech. She was attacked from some quarters, but defended by many more. In 1998 she released Gloria! with a rousing song calling for Cuban freedom in the track Cuba Libre.
3. Craig Stevens -- United States
   Stevens was in his 20s when his stepfather presented him with an antique Orvis bamboo rod. Stevens was a longtime fisherman, having spent his youth divided between conventional fishing and his other love, BMX bike racing. Growing up in Hamden, north of New Haven, he and his cousin Chris would ride their bikes down to the reservoir. They would be like a modern Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn lashing truck-tire inner tubes together and throwing a piece of plywood on top for a deck. They’d pick up their “throwaway” fishing gear that they had hidden in the woods, hop aboard their makeshift vessel and then tie it under a bridge. Their location under the bridge and the expendable gear was necessary because fishing wasn’t allowed in the state reservoirs and the boys needed to keep out of sight of the patrolling DEP inspectors.
4. Do the Right Thing -- Native Americans
   Consumers who put their trust and their money in false advertisements and do not get the promised results. Nearly 70 million Americans are trying to lose weight at any given time.(9) This number is staggering. Because more than two-thirds of American adults are trying to lose weight, it creates a huge market for weight loss products and services. In 2000 alone, U.S. consumers spent about 35 billion of their hard-earned dollars on products and services that they believed would help them lose or maintain their weight.(10)
5. Florida Parishes -- United States
   The Florida Parishes are ecologically, as well as geologically, distinct from the other regions of the LPB. There is a rich diversity of habitat types within this region as Table 1 illustrates. The Louisiana Nature Conservancy ... recognizes this attribute and has created five nature preserves in this region. The five Florida Parish preserves are: Lake Ramsay, which protects the last remaining pine savannah habitat in the region; Abita Creek Flatwoods, which contains a variety of critical habitats and 24 species of rare plants, including the endangered Louisiana quillwort; Charter Oak, which protects a 160-acre bayhead swamp; Talisheek Pine Wetlands, which protects pine wetland habitat and provides habitat for the federally threatened gopher tortoise; and Pushepatapa Creek Preserve, the only officially protected site for a state-rare plant, the mountain laurel.
6. Phillips
   Nominees for The Jay and Rose Phillips Awards must have a physical disability and be vocationally and financially independent (medical assistance excluded) for a minimum of three years. Self-employed individuals are eligible for the award, and employers are encouraged to nominate employees who meet nomination criteria.
7. Janet Reno -- Attorney General Janet Reno
   Janet Reno was the first woman ever to serve as U.S. Attorney General. Born and raised in Dade County, Florida, Reno became the first woman ever appointed to be a State Attorney for Florida. She was re-elected five times, and in 1993 President Bill Clinton appointed her as U.S. Attorney General. One month after her confirmation, Reno took responsibility for the fatal federal showdown with followers of David Koresh at the Branch Davidian Compound in Waco, Texas. During her term she weathered criticism from Democrats (for enabling the investigation which publicly revealed Clinton's affair with intern Monica Lewinsky) and from Republicans (who often portrayed her as a power-hungry liberal egghead). She ... weathered steady parody on shows like Saturday Night Live which poked fun at her for being a tall, not-too-photogenic, unmarried woman.
8. Janet Reno
   Janet Reno is an impelling attorney. She was the first woman to serve as a state attorney in Florida. Ms. Reno achieved a distinguished record while serving in Dade County, Florida. She worked against riots and escalating drug-related crime in Miami (1980's).
9. Cuba -- Fidel Castro
   Under the Castros, Cuba is a highly militarized society. From 1975 until the late 1980s, massive Soviet military assistance enabled Cuba to upgrade its military capabilities and project power abroad. The tonnage of Soviet military deliveries to Cuba throughout most of the 1980s exceeded deliveries in any year since the military build-up during the 1962 missile crisis.
10. Michael Williams
    Michael Williams has been an active blues and jazz guitarist around New England since 1987. He has recently been performing with Grammy winner James Cotton, and has performed throughout the U.S. and Canada with Michelle Willson and others, including Mighty Sam McClain, David “Fathead” Newman, Sugar Ray Norcia, Darrell Nulisch, Tone Cool recording artists The Love Dogs, and blues piano virtuoso David Maxwell. Williams' playing, songwriting, and arranging are featured on Ms. Willson's CD So Emotional, which earned a four-star review in Down Beat magazine.
