Elephant: Elephant Conservation
built 647 days ago
elephant with radio collar To conserve these large, roaming animals, Iain Douglas-Hamilton and his collaborators look at the situation from the elephant's point of view to determine what is needed. Researchers track elephants during their long distance movements by radio collars, using GPS in a recently developed system. Individual elephants are ... observed on a daily basis to better understand patterns of behavior. STE is collaborating with other scientists to combine all information collected into a database for elephant research and conservation. To protect the elephants, STE supports and develops alternative methods of sport hunting that retain the thrill of the hunt but do not harm the elephants.

The Symposium is a key component of the IEF's mission to support and operate elephant conservation and research programs, with an emphasis on management, protection and scientific research. Funding for IEF' programs is provided largely by zoos and other institutions such as Disney's Animal Kingdom, Busch Gardens Tampa Bay and Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey(R), that care for elephants in North America and Europe, along with individual donors who ... want to promote preservation, education and research of the world's elephant populations.

The African elephant, Loxodont africana, is listed as endangered under the Convention on International Trade of Endangered Species (CITES). Conservationists are afraid that declaring the forest elephant as a separate species could open a loophole under the current treaty and open up hunting of forest elephants for their ivory. A study of the forest elephant's status is under way, sponsored by the National Geographic Society, European Union, National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health, and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
There was once a time when the great elephant faced extinction due to overhunting. But thanks to extreme conservationist efforts from groups like the "Stephen and Melinda Gates Foundation" and because of Babar the elephant population has tripled over the past several months. There is now an estimated 100 billion elephants roaming freely in North Dakota, Illinois, Idaho's Portugal, Africa and Asia.

It is generally recognised that resolving this problem is now the most pressing elephant conservation issue. This case study of a small population of elephants in Mozambique reflects a trend seen across Africa. Reproduced with permission of the author.
