Columbus, Ga. — PETA’s shocking anti-circus billboard, which shows an elephant who died of heatstroke when the temperature inside her circus trailer soared above 120°F, along with the tagline "Animals Suffer Under the Big Top. Please Don’t Go to the Circus," and directs observers to PETA’s Web site Circuses.com, has just gone up in Columbus. The billboard, which is located along Veterans Parkway at 23rd, facing north, coincides with the arrival of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus in Columbus.

Tsavo, Africa's second largest park and thought to have been the poachers' destination, is recognized worldwide for its important elephant populations. James Isiche, the East Africa Regional Director for IFAW (International Fund for Animal Welfare -- http://www.ifaw.org/), which is currently funding a major Tsavo restoration project said, "This tragic event is a prime example of the parallel effects of the rampant illegal international elephant ivory trade, responsible for the killing of an estimated 20,000 elephants annually, on human populations. The threat is real, both to humans and elephants, and most wildlife authorities in elephant ranges states are forced to grapple with this challenge."

In the same way that people prepare their homes for a newborn baby, the staff at Disney's Animal Kingdom took steps to "baby proof" the elephant habitat to ensure that there were no hazards for a young elephant calf. The team has taken a critical look at the habitat and made many changes, including planting more trees and shrubbery for shading purposes, closing gaps between boulders, and the installation of a shallow pool behind the scenes where the calf will be able to explore the water and learn to swim in a safe environment.
