Serena Williams overcame a rough first set and tricky wind Wednesday to beat Elena Bovina 1-6, 6-1, 6-4 and reach the Dubai Women's Open quarterfinals. Top-ranked Lindsay Davenport had an easier time, defeating qualifier Jie Zheng 6-2, 7-5. Davenport will next meet Conchita Martinez, who ousted seventh-seeded Nathalie Dechy 6-1, 6-2.

To quote from Sharapova's extensive scouting notes, Bovina is "a tall girl with a powerful game" and towers 2 ∏ inches over the Wimbledon champion. She ... packs a considerably bigger punch, weighing in at 29lbs more than Sharapova. That weight has, apparently settled around her feet which are the size of angle irons. When the sylph-like Sharapova turns sideways, she all but disappears but when Bovina prepares to turn, small animals and children dive for cover.

It was the second time Zimonjic has won the trophy after combining with Elena Bovina to lift it in 2004. He ... won the French Open mixed doubles title with Katarina Srebotnik in 2006. Sun and Zimonjic led 3-1 in the first set before the Indian pair fought back, reeling off three successive games until Mirza, who had her left thigh heavily strapped, lost her serve.

By the start of the second set, Bovina looked beaten. Big, but beaten. The previous two rounds had obviously taught Sharapova a lot and she was in a hurry to show of her new confidence on the treacherous clay.

Bovina, who reached the quarter-finals of the U.S. Open in 2002, lost her way after cruising through the first set. She was the stronger player, though, in the decider and broke Dechy with some fierce hitting in the 12th game.
