Electroless Nickel Plating
built 642 days ago
Electroless Nickel Plating is an application that provides a durable surface coating. Also known as Chemical or Autocatalytic Nickel Plating, this application provides significant advantages, including a uniform coating growth that, in most cases, eliminates the need for subsequent machining.

Solderability/Weldability: Electroless nickel coatings are easily soldered with a highly active acid flux. Soldering without a flux or with a mildly active flux can be difficult especially if the plated part is exposed to the atmosphere for an extended period.

Electroless Nickel is highly resistant to abrasion and has a melting point of approximately 1635 degrees F. It adheres tenaciously to properly prepared substrates and bond strengths of 30,000 to 60,000 lbs. on mild steel are common.

Only one of the shops indicated that an ion exchange unit applied to nickel plating was the cause of an effluent compliance excursion (PS 196). This shop stated: "Excursions happen when the mixed bed of resin is saturated with copper and nickel and will no longer polish the water." This shop uses an off-site service for regeneration and is charged by the number of columns used. Therefore, the shop may tend to load the resin beds to their maximum or beyond their breakthrough point.

The properties of electroless nickel are responsible for the rapid growth of its use as a functional metallic coating in recent years. This is no other coating that has the combination of properties offered by electroless nickel.

Composite Diamond Coating (CODIAC) is a regenerative layer of an electrolessly plated matrix, usually a nickel/phosphorus alloy, with finely divided particles uniformly dispersed in it. The particles are uniform in size, and range from 0.1 to 10 microns. Coatings may contain up to 50% diamond by volume, though standard diamond content is in the 20 to 30% range. The nickel matrix alloy most commonly used is made up of 90-93% nickel and 7-10% phosphorus.
