Electrical conductivity was measured in milliSiemens (mS) in milk from each quarter during every milking at 2-s intervals. A prototype computerized milkmeter combined with a prototype "Mastitis detector" (S.A. Christensen, Kolding, Denmark) was used for data collection. Sensors for measuring EC were incorporated in the milking unit. The milking unit was constructed such that milk from the different quarters remained separated until after EC measurements were obtained. The equipment was calibrated monthly.

Its SI derived unit is the Siemens per meter, but conductivity values are often reported as percent IACS. IACS is an acronym for International Annealed Copper Standard or the material that was used to make traditional copper-wire . The conductivity of the annealed copper (5.8108 x 107S/m) is defined to be 100% IACS at 20°C. All other conductivity values are related back to this conductivity of annealed copper. Therefore, iron with a conductivity value of 1.044 x 107 S/m, has a conductivity of approximately 18% of that of annealed copper and this is reported as 18% IACS.

Electrical conductivity can be measured using a meter and probe as well. The probe consists of two metal electrodes spaced 1 cm apart (... the unit of measurement is microSeimens or milliSeimens per centimeter). A constant voltage is applied across the electrodes resulting in an electrical current flowing through the aqueous sample. Since the current flowing through the water is proportional to the concentration of dissolved ions in the water, the electrical conductivity can be measured. The higher the dissolved salt/ion concentration, the more conductive the sample and hence the higher the conductivity reading.
