Hollow-body electric guitars: A hollow-body electric guitar is basically an acoustic guitar with pickups. Hollow bodies produce some acoustic output and can ... be played through an amplifier. Consider this body type for softer, quieter types of music, such as jazz, that don't require a lot of amplification.

Seven string electric guitars were popularized by Steve Vai. Steve Vai and Japanese guitar company Ibanez created the well known Universe series seven string guitars in the 1980s, with a double locking tremolo system for a seven string guitar. These models were based on Vai's six string signature series, the Ibanez Jem. More recently, seven strings experienced a resurgence in popularity, championed by Korn, Fear Factory, Nevermore, and other Hard Rock/Metal bands.
