Fifty years ago, a clerk at the Gibson Electric Guitar Company wrote a routine entry for "Two Les Paul electric guitars" in a shipping ledger, sandwiched between two inexpensive electric guitars. That entry marked a revolution in the world of music. Half a century later, the Gibson Les Paul electric guitar trademarked body shape is recognized around the world as an icon for rock and roll music. Les Paul electric guitars from the 50s are now among the most highly sought electric guitars by collectors and players, and the Les Paul is still the flagship of Gibson's electric guitar line.

Detail of a Squier-made Fender Stratocaster. Note the tremolo arm, the 3 single-coil pickups, the volume and tone knobs. The working principles of electric guitars are primarily based on induced currents and circuits. Magnets wrapped with coils of very fine wire are located under the ferromagnetic string. Each oblong coil typically runs perpendicularly underneath all of the guitars strings. When a string is played, it oscillates at its fundamental frequency. This movement of the metal string disturbs the magnetic field around the coil's magnet, which in turn induces a weak alternating electric current in the coil. That current is then sent via a wire to an amplifier, resulting in a sound that will in practical terms be produced at exactly the same pitch as the string.[3]
