Eleanor Roosevelt was a leader of the liberal wing of the Democratic party and the wife of Franklin D. Roosevelt, the 32nd President. Her parents died during her childhood, and she was raised by her grandmother and educated in England. In 1905 she married her fifth cousin (once removed) Franklin Delano Roosevelt. At her wedding she was given away by her uncle, President Theodore Roosevelt.

Eleanor Roosevelt began discovering a world beyond the family at Mademoiselle Souvestre's finishing school at South Fields, England, where she went at 15. Mademoiselle Souvestre taught a sense of social service and responsibility, which Eleanor began to act upon after her return to New York. She plunged into social work, but soon her tall, handsome cousin, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, began courting her. They were married in March 1905. She now had to contend with a domineering mother-in-law and a gregarious husband who did not really understand his wife's struggle to overcome shyness and feelings of inadequacy.

Eleanor Roosevelt first came to Campobello in 1903, when she and Franklin were courting, to visit his parents at James and Sara’s summer cottage. Eleanor was nineteen. In her will, Mrs. Hartman Kuhn, fond of Eleanor, gave Franklin’s mother the right to purchase the Kuhn (now Roosevelt) Cottage for the young couple. Sara did this and the cottage became Eleanor’s own to furnish and run. She made it into a summer destination for both family and friends.

After losing both her parents, she was raised by her stern and proper grandmother, and her loneliness persisted until she was befriended by the headmistress at her boarding school. She "came out" into society, but preferred volunteer work at a settlement house to the social whirl. In 1905 she married her cousin, Franklin Roosevelt, a marriage made more complex by her domineering mother-in-law, Sara. While raising six children, Eleanor Roosevelt gradually found the determination to abandon traditional roles in favor of political and reform work.

Eleanor Roosevelt was buried next to Franklin D. Roosevelt in Hyde Park, New York on November 10, 1962. So revered was she among the public that a commemorative cartoon published at the time simply showed two angels looking down towards an opening in the clouds with the caption "She's here", since no introduction was needed.
