Previously overlooked about Roosevelt, says Beasley, editor of The White House Press Conferences of Eleanor Roosevelt , is "the obvious": She became the most influential woman of her day through skillful use of the media. Roosevelt built a career, advanced her causes, and managed the press as no woman ever had. Largely a chronicle of these activities, the book would have been more valuable had it compared Roosevelt's efforts to what women before or after her had done, or to what her own husband was doing concurrently. The book's best parts, describing the unusually symbiotic relationship between Roosevelt and a circle of women reporters, might ... have been elaborated. A marginal academic purchase. Robert F. Eleanor Roosevelt Circle is a cooperative partnership of Davis Senior Housing Cooperative, Neighborhood Partners, LLC, and the Yolo County Housing Authority. Predevelopment funding has come through the Kaplan Fund of the Cooperative Development Foundation, the Northern California Community Loan Fund and the City of Davis. Permanent financing is provided by the California Housing Finance Agency, the California State Department of Housing and Community Development Multi-Family Housing Program and an Affordable Housing Program grant applied for by First Northern Bank and made available through the Federal Home Loan Bank of San Francisco. Eleanor Roosevelt Circle will be managed by the John Stewart Company.

Eleanor grew up cloaked in the stilted remnants of the Victorian age, which persisted longer in conservative monied circles in the United States than it did in Great Britain. In spite of her enterprising family young Eleanor seemed destined to become another fashionable post-Victorian woman whose life would consist of her "coming out," becoming engaged and then married, bearing children-though doing little to raise them-and remaining properly useless except for providing fashionable support for fashionable causes.
