Effexor: Taking Effexor
built 642 days ago
In June 2005, the FDA announced that several recent scientific publications suggested the possibility of an increased risk for suicidal behavior in adults being treated with antidepressant medications, including Effexor. The FDA advised that adults taking antidepressants, particularly those being treated for depression, should be watched closely for worsening depression and increased suicidality. Monitoring these patients is especially important when treatment begins, and when doses are increased or decreased. The FDA is working closely with antidepressant manufacturers to fully evaluate the risk of suicidality in adults treated with these medications. Click here for more information on this advisory.

The product insert for Effexor (linked below) suggests that "Although Venlafaxine has not been shown to increase the impairment of mental and motor skills caused by alcohol, patients should be advised to avoid alcohol while taking Venlafaxine" (p. 16).

Venlafaxine (Effexor®) can make your mouth dry. Chewing sugarless gum, sucking hard candy and drinking plenty of water will help. Do not treat yourself for coughs, colds, or allergies without asking your doctor or health care professional for advice. Some ingredients may increase possible side effects. If you are going to have surgery, tell your doctor or health care professional that you are taking venlafaxine (Effexor®) .

The most important thing to know before taking Effexor is that it must not be used in combination with MAO inhibitors (for example, Nardil [Phenelzine], Marplan [isocarboxazid] and Parnate [tranylcypromine]). Serious and even fatal complications may result from such a combination. In addition, wait 14 days after discontinuing the MAOI before starting Effexor, and 7 days after discontinuing Effexor before starting an MAOI.
