Children, teenagers, and young adults who take Effexor may be at increased risk for suicidal thoughts or actions. Watch all patients who take Effexor closely. Contact the doctor at once if new, worsened, or sudden symptoms such as depressed mood; anxious, restless, or irritable behavior; panic attacks; or any unusual change in mood or behavior occur. Contact the doctor right away if any signs of suicidal thoughts or actions occur.

Effexor may cause drowsiness, dizziness or blurred vision. Patients using Effexor should not drive, use machinery, until the effects of Effexor on that patient are known. Alcohol may increase dizziness or drowsiness.

Effexor does not interact significantly with many other medications, including lithium, diazepam (Valium), and cimetidine (Tagamet, an anti-ulcer medication). However, patients taking cimetidine who have high blood pressure or liver disease or are elderly should use caution in taking Effexor because the interaction can be more pronounced when these disorders are present.

In patients with Social Anxiety Disorder, Effexor XR has been shown to be effective in a 6- month clinical trial. The need for continuing medication in patients with Social Anxiety Disorder who improve with Effexor XR treatment should be periodically reassessed.

There were 2 reports of acute overdose with Effexor XR in GAD trials. One patient took a combination of 0.75 g of Effexor XR and 200 mg of paroxetine and 50 mg of zolpidem. This patient was described as being alert, able to communicate, and a little sleepy. This patient was hospitalized, treated with activated charcoal, and recovered without any untoward effects. The other patient took 1.2 g of Effexor XR. This patient recovered and no other specific problems were found.
