Educational Theory
built 220 days ago
"Educational Theory is a long-standing and prestigious international journal that continues to produce "on the edge" critical thinking that bridges philosophy, sociology, and history. While the breadth of its interests is wide, the strong editorial focus on key educational issues means that it provides the necessary in-depth stimulus to frame and inform contemporary debates in ways that few other journals provide." - Jill Blackmore, Deakin University, Australia, Director, Centre for Education and Change

The Department of Educational Theory and Practice (ETAP) is a vibrant and inclusive community of students and faculty. In this community, students and faculty dream and challenge, create and examine, test and implement the best of what education can be to meet the contemporary learning needs of society wherever those arise.

"For fifty years, Educational Theory has had no peer in the quality of dialogue and theoretical analyses it provides. A journal with a conscience, Educational Theory is a reliable source of insightful scholarship, a standard by which other journals may measure themselves. Its articles make for essential and riveting reading. The appearance of the Blackwell on-line edition is welcome news for anyone in educational philosophy or, more broadly, educational theory, who hopes to understand contemporary educational issues in their global context; it will make the vital ideas of the journal available to a much wider audience." - Leslie Roman, University of British Columbia, Canada

The mission of the The Department of Educational Theory, Policy and Administration, consistent with the University mission, is to engage in research, teaching, and service. The Department prepares educational leaders and scholars through a range of programs for educational professionals, including teachers, administrators, and policy makers from preschool to adult levels. In their research and teaching, Departmental faculty examine institutional policies and practices and factors that influence them, as well as the day-to-day operation of schools and non-school educational agencies. Undergraduate teacher education at the GSE is a major Departmental commitment, and Departmental faculty contribute in many ways to the success of the undergraduate teacher education program.

Educational Theory and Social Foundations offers concentrations in the philosophy of education, history of education, educational sociology, and interdisciplinary foundations of education. This concentration seeks to provide students with a rigorous methodological and theoretical training in these areas of research. The general purposes of the program are to foster the understanding and development of educational theory in the context of the broader questions of the above disciplines and to develop the capacity to engage in effective discussion of theoretical problems pertaining to education, especially justice, multiculturalism, peace, and democracy.
