Later on, retired sea captain Edmund Gwenn likewise comes across the moribund Harry. Both MacLaine and Gwenn have reason to believe that they're responsible for Harry's demise; MacLaine thinks that she killed Harry by clobbering him with a bottle, while Gwenn is certain that he shot the poor fellow while hunting.

Gwenn spielte in mehr als achtzig Filmen mit, unter anderem in Stolz und Vorurteil (1940) und in Das Wunder in der 34. Straße (1947), für den er den Oscar als bester Nebendarsteller erhielt. Kurz vor Ende seiner Karriere spielte er eine Hauptrolle in Alfred Hitchcocks Kriminalkömödie Immer Ärger mit Harry (1955). Für Hitchcock spielte er bereits zuvor in drei weiteren Filmen, unter anderem hatte eine kleine aber denkwürdige Rolle als Meuchelmörder in Der Auslandskorrespondent (1940).

He wonders why Harry has so much business in Los Angeles. He is shocked when he finds that Harry is married to another woman (Ida Lupino), and she is ... the mother of his baby to boot.
