Candice Bergen (Shirley Schmidt) is the daughter of ventroloquist Edgar Bergen and actress Frances (Westerman) Bergen. Although she struggled early in her career to escape the shadow of her father, she eventually established her own name as an actor and has gone on to have a prolific career. Her best-known role was as the hard-nosed, quirky title character of the CBS series Murphy Brown (1988-98). Bergen won five Emmy awards (and was nominated seven times) for this role before withdrawing herself from consideration after winning in 1995.
