Edgar Allan Poe: West Point
built 657 days ago
Poe's main concern focused upon matters of design, proportion and composition; his use of effect meant the impact which a short work would make upon a reader. In reviewing Hawthorne's Twice Told Tales, he pointed out the writer's obligation and reward: "If his very initial sentence tend not to be the outbringing of this effect, then he has failed in his first step. In the whole composition there should be no word written, of which the tendency, direct or indirect, is not to the one pre-established design. And by such means, with such care and skill, a picture is at length painted which leaves in the mind of him who contemplates it with a kindred art, a sense of the fullest satisfaction."

The Poe Shadow is an entertaining detective story--one could almost imagine that the tale comes from the pen of Edgar Allan Poe. Of course the focal point of the book is Poe's murder.
The West Point appointment came through the next month, but, since Poe no longer had any use for it, he did not last long as a cadet. Lacking Allan's permission to resign, Poe sought and received a dismissal for "gross neglect of duty" and "disobedience of orders." His guardian, long widowed, had taken a young wife who might well give him an heir, and Poe realized that his hopes of a legacy were without foundation.

The mystery does not end with Poe's death. At a certain point in time, his remains were exhumed and moved to another part of the cemetery, but even later, a scandal developed that seemed to prove they were not Poe's remains after all.
