Edema
built 657 days ago
Edema is a term used in reference to swollen feet that usually occurs during the last few months of a woman's pregnancy. The enlarging uterus exerts pressure on to blood vessels located in the legs and pelvis, which in turn causes the blood's circulation to slow down, allowing blood to accumulate in the lower extremities.

Edema is a plant's reaction to an excessive amount of water in its cells. It is a physiological disorder that can affect a wide variety of indoor and greenhouse ornamental plants, particularly geraniums.

Edema, is a bursting of the cell walls on the underside of the leaf. Symptoms of edema appear as bumps or blisters initially on the undersides of lower or older leaves on a plant. They may then turn brownish or tan and become corky. Severely affected leaves will often turn yellow and fall off the plant. The corky spots sometimes resemble spider mite or thrips damage. To rule out pest damage, use a handlens and check carefully on the undersides of leaves along midveins for spider mites and in growing points for thrips.

Edema may be caused by any agent that stimulates an abnormal increase in the size and number of a group of inner cells. Edema can be induced by (1) spraying with some chemicals such as ammoniacal copper carbonate in an oil emulsion, (2) injuries resulting from wind-blown sand particles and sucking insects, (3) high light intensity (over 2000 foot-candles) for ivy geraniums, and (4) accumulation of water in the intercellular spaces.

Edema in the abdomen is ... known as ascites. Cirrhosis, cancer, congestive heart failure, tuberculosis, an infections may cause edema. A person with ascites may have a distended abdomen, and experience nausea, heartburn, GERD, respiratory distress, abdominal distention, early satiety, and pain.

Edema can be caused by a sedentary lifestyle - in other words, long periods of standing or sitting. If this is the case for you, regular exercise (not necessarily prolonged or strenuous) should help.
