Edema is swelling from an excessive accumulation of fluid in the small spaces that surround the tissue and organs. Swelling of the Feet and Legs is referred to as peripheral edema. Edema is a physiological problem occurring mainly on ivy geraniums. Edema, simply put, is a bursting of the cell walls on the underside of the leaf. It results in leaves with corky spots which sometimes resembles spider mite damage. At worst it causes leaves to yellow and die. Edema is not a disease, bacterium, or a virus; it is not transmittable from one plant to the next. Edema is caused by maintaining a greenhouse environment that's not necessarily ideal for growing ivy geraniums, often combined with over watering of the crop.

Edema is the accumulation of fluid in any given location in the body. Edema can result from trauma, as in a sprained ankle, or from a chronic condition such as heart or kidney failure. The word edema is from the Greek and means "swelling." The presence of edema can be an important diagnostic tool for the physician. A patient who is developing congestive heart failure often will develop edema in the ankles. Congestive heart failure means that the heart is laboring against very high blood pressure and the heart itself has enlarged to the point that it is not effectively circulating the blood. Excess fluid will leave the circulatory system and accumulate between the cells in the body.

Edema is a condition that results when the plant takes up more water through the roots than the leaves can give off in the form of water vapor through the stomates. The excess water accumulates in the leaf cells, causing them to enlarge and often burst. As the cells become engorged with water, swellings may appear on the upper or lower surface of the leaf. The afflicted cells often have a dark green bacterial-like water-soaked appearance surrounding these swollen cells. Thin leaves as found on Schefflera and Citrus may have a mottled appearance.
