Eddie Murphy: Beverly Hills Cop
built 607 days ago
Eddie Murphy once told his tenth grade social studies teacher, as reported in Rolling Stone, "I'm going to be bigger than Bob Hope." The enormously popular entertainer was well on his way to turning that youthful boast into a statement of fact after releasing such hit movies as 48 Hours and Beverly Hills Cop in the early 1980s. In addition to his cinematic success, he starred on late-night television, toured before sell-out audiences and recorded a couple of best-selling comedy albums. Newsweek called him "the hottest performer in the land," for whom "the sky seems to be the limit." And Time named him "Hollywood's uncontested box-office champ." While some of his movies in the late 1980s and 1990s were less than stellar, and critics talked of Murphy as a star in decline, he has shown fans and detractors alike that his talent is able to weather bad projects.

[I]n 1986, Murphy starred in the supernatural comedy, The Golden Child.[3] The Golden Child was originally intended to be a serious adventure picture starring Mel Gibson. After Gibson turned the role down, the project was offered to Murphy as it was subsequently rewritten as a partial comedy. Although The Golden Child (featuring Murphy's "I want the knife!" routine) performed well at the box office, the movie was not as critically acclaimed as 48 Hrs., Trading Places, and Beverly Hills Cop. The Golden Child was considered a change of pace for Murphy because of the supernatural setting as opposed to the more "street smart" settings of Murphy's previous efforts. A year later, Murphy reprised his role of Axel Foley in the Tony Scott-directed Beverly Hills Cop II.
The third entry in the popular Beverly Hills Cop series finds Detroit cop Axel Foley (Eddie Murphy) returning yet again to Southern California, this time on the trail of two car thieves turned murderers. As he teams up again with L.A. cop Billy Rosewood (Judge Reinhold), Foley's investigation leads him to Wonder World, a theme park that is ... the front for a major counterfeiting ring. More action and less wit are the trademarks of this film, which features Murphy dishing out his usual wisecracks, but with less flair and freshness than in the original film. Alan Young plays the old man who runs the amusement park, an interesting setting that still adds little to the tired premise. ~ Don Kaye, All Movie Guide

Murphy is not afraid to tackle any subject or anyone. All is fair game for his razor sharp wit, from bashing gays, to jokes about modern women and even jokes about Stevie Wonder. His comedy is characterized by frequent cursing and adult subject matter hence the advisory on the label for explicit material. This CD is not for the faint of heart or those easily offended. This is the hungry Eddie Murphy, fresh from his SNL success and movie debut in 48 Hrs. but before his rise to mega star status that came the following year with Beverly Hills Cop.
Synopsis: Axel Foley is back on the beat in this belated entry in the popular Beverly Hills Cop film series that finds Eddie Murphy revising the character that helped launch him to international stardom in the mid-'80s. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie GuideRead More
