Eddie Izzard: Joe Egg
built 195 days ago
Eddie Izzard may have a great gift for comedy but he is equally at home on the more serious stage. In 1999 he secured the lead in Sir Peter Hall's West End production of Lenny. His portrayal of Bri, in A Day in the Death of Joe Egg in London in 2002 and on Broadway in 2003 saw him recently nominated for a prestigious Tony Award.
Izzard is currently in rehearsals for "Joe Egg," taking over for Clive Owen as Bri, the young father struggling to come to terms with the burden of caring for his severely brain-damaged daughter. He joins original cast members Victoria Hamilton (as wife Sheila) and Prunella Scales (as Bri's mother Grace). Izzard's previous stage credits include the critically acclaimed "Lenny" -- of which Eddie's performance was called, "The most phenomenal performance of the London stage," by the Daily Mail and a "tour de force," by the New York Times -- as well as David Mamet's "The Cryptogram," "Edward II" and "900 Oneonta."

Eddie ... appeared as Lenny Bruce alongside Elizabeth Berkeley in the stage production of Lenny in which he started and ended the show completely naked. In 2002 he took over from Clive Owen in A Day In The Death Of Joe Egg at The New Ambassadors Theatre in London. His new show, Sexie is set to tour most of the world with stops in the UK happening during December 2003.

Dress To Kill was issued on DVD on Anti/Epitaph in October 2002, marking Izzard's first video release in the US. His previous five performances (including Dress To Kill) were already out on video in the UK, but Izzard wanted to give something back to the American fans. His Broadway performance in Peter Nichols' A Day in the Death of Joe Egg earned him a Tony nomination for "Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Play" in May 2003. Stateside dates followed in the fall. ~ MacKenzie Wilson, All Music Guide
