[N]o one, maybe not even Eddie Griffin himself, could have explained his actions last week, when a moving freight train, behind crossing gates, thundered in front of his Nissan SUV about 1:30 Friday morning in southeast Houston. In an instant when Griffin simply should have just stopped and waited, he stepped on the gas.

Working on the set of the upcoming movie, Redline, Eddie Griffin had the unique opportunity to drive and subsequently crash a $1.5 million Enzo Ferrari owned by the film’s producer, Daniel Sadek. The plot summary, according to IMDB.com, had already included the intentional crashing of one of Sadek’s cars, a Porsche Carrera valued at $450,000. I’m guessing this crash came as an unexpected surprise.

On March 30, 2006, Griffin was involved in a car crash. Witnesses and friends stated that he was watching a pornographic movie on a DVD in his vehicle, and was masturbating while driving. After the accident, Griffin entered a nearby convenience store. The store's security camera recorded video of Griffin repeatedly saying he was drunk, that he didn't have a driver's license, and pleading with the man whose SUV he crashed into, offering to buy him a new car in exchange for not calling the police. Police eventually did arrive... but allegedly did not require Griffin to submit to a breathalyzer test or field sobriety test. An investigation was conducted to determine if the officers violated standard protocol in light of Griffin's celebrity status.[6]

Once the nation's top high school basketball player and an NBA lottery pick, Griffin was 25 when he died last week in a gruesome collision with a moving freight train. His descent from millionaire prospect to grim statistic was stunning, say those who knew him - but not altogether surprising.

Officials said Griffin, 25, drove his SUV through a railroad crossing barrier and into a moving train about 1:30 a.m. on Aug. 17. The vehicle burst into flames on impact, damaging Griffin's body so badly that investigators had to use his dental records to verify his identity Tuesday.
