Out of the devastation of World War II sprang the Australian Committee for the World Council of Churches (1946). This developed into the Australian Council of Churches which, in 1994,gave way tothe National Council of Churches in Australia.

Twenty-one ecumenical councils are listed in the annals of the Roman Catholic church, according to the places in which they were held. Members of the Orthodox church and many Protestants acknowledge the authority of only the first seven of these councils. Martin Luther accepted only the first four councils.

The next two are regarded as ecumenical by some in the Eastern Orthodox Church but not by other Eastern Orthodox Christians, who instead consider them to be important local councils. They have ... received universal acceptance by all Eastern Orthodox Churches even where their ecumenicity is not recognized.
