Ecumenical Council: Meetings
built 627 days ago
How frivolous, how irresponsible is the very intent of those who wish to make an "Ecumenical Council"! This is the work, not of pastors, but of hirelings, who look first to see what the flock wants (and not the best part of the flock!), and then hasten to legalize it, solely to give an appearance of leading rather than following the lawless sheep! The Orthodox people can expect nothing from such a council except to be told, in effect if not in so many words, that their falling away from the standard of orthodox life is acceptable and even praiseworthy, and actually helps to unite them to the heterodox, who long ago lost the very concept of such a standard!

According to the Council, Nestorianism overemphasized the human nature of Jesus Christ at the expense of the divine. The Council denounced Patriarch Nestorius' teaching as erroneous. Nestorius asserted that Jesus Christ is one person, not two separate "people": the Man, Jesus Christ and the Son of God, Logos. The Council decreed that Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God (Logos), is complete God and complete man, with a rational soul and body. The Virgin Mary is "Theotokos" because she gave birth not to man but to God who became man. The union of the two natures of Christ took place in such a fashion that one did not disturb the other.

Protestants recognize the authority of the first four ecumenical councils, but, as first expressed by Martin Luther, do not regard ecumenical councils and their canons as binding on the conscience. Only when council decisions follow scripture do Protestants consider them authoritative. Nevertheless Protestant observers have officially attended the last two councils. The ecumenical movement among Protestants is not to be confused with an ecumenical council, although they share a similar aim.

The programme plan approved by the executive committee lists six areas that will provide the framework for the Council's activities in the coming period. These are: WCC and the ecumenical movement in the 21st century; unity, mission and spirituality; public witness; justice and diakonia; ecumenical and faith formation; inter-religious dialogue and cooperation.

Within this spirit, every person affiliated with the organization is identified as a member of the Council. Vision, direction and specific projects, among other tasks, become the responsibility of every member of the Council. A job description for Trustees would ... include other aspects of governance, personnel and finance.
