Economic Depressions: Great Depression
built 606 days ago
The most severe and widespread of all economic depressions occurred in the 1930s. The Great Depression affected the United States first but quickly spread to Western Europe. From 1933 to 1937 the United States began to recover from the depression, but the economy declined again from 1937 to 1938, before regaining its normal level. This decline was called a recession, a term that is now used in preference to liquidation. Real economic recovery was not evident until early 1941.
By the early 1930s millions of unemployed Americans were plagued by all the evils which accompany unrelenting economic depressions. To alleviate that suffering, old political men conjured up dreams of antidotes. Aided by the vision of talented young landscape architects, they devised a make-work program which would utilize $16 million of federal relief money to build a scenic highway connecting the newly established Shenandoah National Park and its twin sister, the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. The project was to employ thousands of needy mountaineers for a period of two years, with Virginia, North Carolina and Tennessee sharing mileage. And recent New Deal legislation had provided funds for relief projects such as "construction of park ways."
The author is a product of the “Greatest Generation,” meaning that he has lived through economic depressions and several wars. Life’s experiences left an indelible impression: adversity is arguably the most powerful force in developing maturity. Learning to persevere in response to challenges is one of the essential steps along the road to adulthood. The message the author conveys to young readers, imparted in the guise of adventure stories, is - be resolute, be honest, be kind, have courage, and have faith in yourself. The author brings to his writing a broad experience of human nature garnered over the years from his relations with patients and their families. He has worked with young people as a teacher and mentor throughout his career in medicine, always learning from them.

When times are tough during economic depressions, families struggle to get by, often being pushed to the breaking point. Such is the case for the family of young Liam (Anthony Burrows), a boy growing up during such a depression in early 20th century Great Britain. At the outset of the film, Liam’s father (Ian Hart) still has work, while many others struggle to get by without consistent employment. However, the factory where he works soon closes. Even though the family paid into the charity fund at their church, Dad refuses to take a handout, even when Mum (Claire Hackett) begs him to. Now, the only family member really working is Liam’s older sister Teresa (Megan Burns), who’s a housekeeper for a prominent Jewish family in the area.
The most important fact to understand about economic depressions is that they are not natural phenomena of market economies, but the product of repeated, ongoing government interference with markets. The defenders of FDR (who, though they will deny it, are ... defenders of Hoover, because economic illiteracy is bipartisan and both presidents embarked on parallel paths of massive government interventions) claim that the Great Depression was caused by market failures. What nonsense! This is like blaming someone for dying if you shoot him. The tragedy of the 1930s is that markets weren’t allowed to work. First Hoover, then FDR, caused massive economic dislocations through repeated federal interventions.
The Great Depression (... known in the U.K. as the Great Slump) was a dramatic, worldwide economic downturn beginning in some countries as early as 1928. The beginning of the Great Depression in the United States is associated with the stock market crash on October 29, 1929, known as Black Tuesday. The depression had devastating effects in both the industrialized countries and those which exported raw materials. International trade declined sharply, as did personal incomes, tax revenues, prices and profits. Cities all around the world were hit hard, especially those dependent on heavy industry. Construction was virtually halted in many countries.
