Ebola: Marburg Hfs

A leading exponent of this school of thought is author Leonard Horowitz, whose book claims the intended targets of Ebola are "communism, black nationalism, and the Third World populations" (Horowitz, dustjacket). Horowitz and his work have been criticized on technical grounds, and his claim (Horowitz p395) that Marburg and Ebola are close cousins is demonstrably false (they are different, and rather dissimilar, species). Many feel this error demonstrates a fatal lack of technical rigor in Horowitz' work.

Ebola and Marburg have served as a rich source of ideas and plotlines for many forms of entertainment. The infatuation with the virus is likely due to the high mortality rate of its victims, its mysterious nature, and its tendency to cause gruesome bleeding from body orifices.

Ebola along with the Marburg virus are the only viruses identified in the Filoviridae family (CDC,2002). Filovirus virions are characterized by having one molecule of single stranded, negative-sense RNA, as well as their unique "U" shaped structures (CDC, 2002).
