The conflict on the Eastern Front during WWII saw some of the fiercest and bloodiest fighting of the war. But it was not only a battle between two vast armies, it was ... a battle of cultures, politics, and ideals. It was a conflict of Nazism v Stalinism, Fascism v Communism, East v West. This was a conflict, which would shape the modern world.

There was more movement on the Eastern Front, where the armies were not as evenly matched. The poorly-equipped Russians suffered many losses fighting off Austria-Hungary and Turkey. In fact, the high casualties and poor showing of the Russian army was an important factor in the Russian Revolution. By 1917 Russia had lost a staggering 74% of the soldiers it sent to war.

Nazi Germany was beaten on the Eastern Front in World War Two but, perhaps inevitably, films involving the Western Front are far more popular in the West.
