East Timor: Cent
built 123 days ago
In Affiliation with AllPosters.com East Timor is a stunning sight (especially from the air) as it's ringed by miles of sandy beaches and a deep bluish-green sea. At its center, toothy-edged mountains jut skyward covered by thick green forest, and on misty days it has the look of paradise found.

East Timor suffers from a significant unemployment problem which is an important factor contributing to political instability. Overall unemployment in Dili was estimated in 2005 to be 27 per cent, with youth unemployment (ages 15-24) estimated at 40 per cent. According to the IMF in 2004, 13 per cent of workers are in paid employment, with the remainder being self-employed or contributing family workers. This unemployment data should be interpreted with caution given the difficulties in measuring unemployment in a subsistence economy.

East Timor's climate is tropical with temperatures ranging from 21C to 33C, except at higher altitudes. The heaviest rainfall is recorded in December and January, although the wet season does not finish until around the end of April. Humidity ranges between 60 per cent and 100 per cent.

The eastern part of Timor is rugged, with the mountains rising to 9,721 feet (2,963 metres) at Mount Tatamailau (Tata Mailau) in the centre of a high plateau. The area has a dry tropical climate and moderate rainfall. Hilly areas are covered with sandalwood; scrub and grass grow in the lowlands, together with coconut palms and eucalyptus trees. There are hot springs and numerous mountain streams. Wildlife includes the cuscus (a species of marsupial), monkeys, deer, civet cats, snakes, and crocodiles. Agriculture is the mainstay of the economy; chief products include copra, hides, coffee, cotton, rice, wheat, tobacco, wool, potatoes, and corn (maize), as well as pearls and sandalwood.

From December 2001 through March 2002, the Center implemented a project to strengthen the links between communities, local organizations, and the police and the courts in East Timor. The project sought to promote good governance, accountability of public institutions through the dissemination of public information to citizens, and the work of local organizations at the grassroots level.
