LYCOS RETRIEVER
Earl Weaver Baseball

[N]ext to modern graphic displays, Earl Weaver Baseball is grainy, pixilated and highly inadequate. But the game play still features AI that is based on an actual human mind, and a successful professional at that. For this reason, it is difficult to dismiss the game based on its rudimentary graphics. Anytime a game can create two levels of fun, it is a must-have. Building the power team is going to appeal to the managers of the world, and pitting them against others will attract the sports enthusiast and action gamer. In short, this game has a little something for everyone, and a gamer really can’t go wrong by downloading it.

The graphics of Earl Weaver Baseball (EWB) are very, very good; a split screen shows the pitcher/hitter action on one side, and the action on the field on the other. You watch the pitcher become animated and throw a screwball or curve; you watch (or control ) the batter as he takes a sucker pitch, or lets a high ball sail past him, or bunts, or knocks a fastball foul, or belts a home run out of Fenway. And there's everything a computer baseball game nut could ask for: natural or artificial turf, a radar gun, wind, trajectory, even the umpire's sign for a foul ball! As well, there are the charming added extras such as slow motion, instant replay, freeze-frame, special effects.

With the proffered tools and a little patience, Earl Weaver Baseball provides the wherewithal to do just about anything baseball-related except run in full career mode with rookie drafting and player retirements. However, even that aspect can be accomplished if you're willing to set up rules for retirements and hold your own draft with custom made players.

Earl Weaver Baseball's graphics are severely outdated, but the game has one of the most flexible baseball game engines available on any gaming platform. Thanks to the customization options, the game has depth comparable to modern baseball games. After more than 15 years, and in an age of nearly photo-realistic 3D graphics and gigabyte processors, some aspects of Earl Weaver Baseball's custom gameplay are still astounding. ~ Kyle Knight, All Game Guide

Since the glory days of Earl Weaver, not much has changed. Sure, they've become glorious to look at, especially the latest Major League Baseball 2K7 that has the art of presentation mastered, but in terms of actual playability, there have been very few innovations.
