Dwight Eisenhower: Western Allies
built 622 days ago
Nurture and nature played their respective roles in shaping Dwight Eisenhower. Physically, he inherited a strong, tough, big, athletic body and extremely good looks, with a quite fabulous grin, along with keen intelligence. He ... inherited a strong competitive streak from his parents, plus a bad temper, along with unquestioning love, stern discipline, ambition, and religion. They made him study, read the Bible aloud, do chores. They instilled in him a series of controls over his emotions, his temper most of all. They gave him a solid Victorian outlook on the relations between the sexes and on proper conduct.

Eisenhower had a terrible temper and got into many fistfights. Once, when he was not allowed to go trick-or-treating with his older brothers on Halloween, he furiously pounded his fists against an apple tree until they were bloody. His mother bandaged his hands and told him he had to learn to control that temper, adding “He that conquereth his own soul is greater than he who taketh a city.” He later called this the most valuable moment of his life.

Naturally, Eisenhower declared "Food fight!" and the Allies emerged victorious. A grateful America decided to make him their leader; but decided to wait six or seven years before doing so, just so it didn't go to his head.
