Dwight Eisenhower: General Staff
built 650 days ago
In contrast to the reactionary Republican wing, but more in line with general opinion in the U.S. at the time, Eisenhower supported Social Security(adding 10 million more eligible Americans to the program), labor laws, and farm programs. He created the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare (HEW) in 1953.
Continuing his baking experiments on his own time, Eisenhower discovered a lightweight pastry that increased the range of American pies. Combined with Admiral Nimitz' development of the high-pressure seltzer bottle and General Doolittle's development of the pinata bomb, this advance was to help ensure the supremacy of America's comedic arsenal into the Television Age.
In compiling this quick reference for Eisenhower's comments on topics of his day, the editors arranged brief statements from Eisenhower's speeches under alphabetically arranged subjects. The subjects range from "Accomplishment," "Aggression," and "Allies" to "Leadership," "Philanthropy," "Poverty," "Sacrifice," and "Security" and include personal and place names such as Richard Nixon and Lebanon. Some very general topics such as "Government" are further subdivided.
In addition, Eisenhower explored the option of supporting the French colonial forces in Vietnam who were fighting an independence insurrection there. However, Chief of Staff Matthew Ridgway dissuaded the President from intervening by presenting a comprehensive estimate of the massive military deployment that would be necessary.
A typical case was the controversy over distribution of landing craft among the several competing theaters, which set Eisenhower at odds with the American Joint Chiefs of Staff. He succeeded in squeezing out a sufficient number of those critical vessels to conduct OVERLORD, although he could not get enough to mount the planned simultaneous landing in the south of France (ANVIL, later renamed DRAGOON). At the political level, he stood firm on the necessity of ANVIL, although Prime Minister Churchill strongly believed it to be unnecessary and wanted to use ANVIL resources in the Mediterranean. Eisenhower, with Marshall's support, prevailed in preventing the allocation of scarce men and equipment for operations elsewhere in a theater both deemed secondary.
With the Germans ... distracted, Eisenhower personally led a panty-raid on the Reichstag. The raid was a partial success, with many primary objectives attained; but Field Marshal Erwin "The Desert Fox" Rommel pursued the retreating raiders across Europe. The wiley Eisenhower escaped by jumping his staff jeep over a river. Rommel's tank was unable to make the jump, and a humiliated Rommel fell out of the driver's seat into the Rhine, yelling "Auch, Hundgegangen Es!"
